BFS as a sports park?
23 January 2007

A recently-approved report on Youth Sports Facilities by the Claremont Human Services and Community Services Commissions lists the Bernard Field Station as an alternative site for a lighted youth sports facility! The report asks city staff to investigate the BFS and two other sites as possible locations for 4 large lighted soccer and 4 lighted baseball/softball fields.

Although the chances of the colleges agreeing to use the land for this purpose are non-existent, the fact that the commissions even considered building here shows a considerable lack of understanding of the value of the BFS and of the direction of the new General Plan with regard to open space and sustainability issues.

The report, entitled “Youth Sports Facility Field Usage & Lighting Needs Assessment Report, is available on the city website. The discussion of the BFS is on page 6.
