Project Approval Process -- City The City of Claremont has designated the Architectural Commission as the body to consider and approve this project. The Architectural Commission held hearings on and certified the EIR. They will consider approval of the project, probably in February. The public may comment in writing or orally at the Architectural Commission meeting. The Architectural Commission decision can be appealed to the City Council by any Claremont citizen. The appeal must be filed within 10 days, and there is a $100 fee. If the Council agrees to hear the appeal, the public again may make written and oral comment. Otherwise, the Architectural Commission hearing will be the last opportunity for public input on the project as a whole. Once the project is approved, the City and CUC will draw up a Development Agreement. This is the legally binding document that specifies exactly the conditions of the project for both the City and the Colleges. The Development Agreement must be approved by the Architectural Commission and the City Council. There is no opportunity for public input on the Development Agreement.
Possible Action In addition to writing the City and testifying at meetings, there are several other actions to consider. Personal conversations with Commission members, Council members, and City staff can also be effective. Letters to the Editors of local papers will inform others of your concerns. Contact one of the concerned groups to find out more. Here are a few: The Coalition to Preserve Claremont's Character, an informal association of concerned citizens who would like Claremont citizens to be able to vote on this project. The Local Wilderness Coalition is an umbrella group concerned with a variety of issues in Claremont, including wilderness preservation, the KGI, and biotechnology. The Friends of the Bernard Biological Field Station is an incorporated, charitable organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the Bernard Field Station. |
